Glavni negativac pjesme “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” Boba Dylana, umro je 3. siječnja. Čuveni ‘William Zanzinger‘, odnosno u stvarnom životu Billy Zantzinger, ubojica konobarice Hattie Carroll, nije doživio sedamdesetu godinu života.
Billy Zantzinger bio je imućni vlasnik plantaža pamuka u Marylandu koji je 1963. osuđen za ubojstvo 51-godišnje tamnopute konobarice Hattie Carroll, jer joj je predugo trebalo da mu posluži piće.
Tada 24-godišnjem Zantzingeru optužnica je preinačena u ubojstvo na mah, zbog čega je odsjedio 6 mjeseci u zatvoru.
Priča je šokirala Dylana, pa je u listopadu 1963. napisao pjesmu “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” tek neznatno promijenivši ime ubojice.

Dylanovom biografu Howardu Sounesu, Zantzinger je 2001. kazao kako ta pjesma nije nikako utjecala na njegov život, da je apsolutno lažna, no istovremeno je Dylana počastio prilično zanimljivim uvredama navodeći kako ‘ga je trebao tužiti i strpati u zatvor.’
