    Da cenzori BBC-a nisu bili tako striktni početkom 1980-ih, možda bi se najpoznatiji hit Pište i Hard Timea danas zvao “Pogue Mahone and Go to Hell”? Vremena se mijenjaju, grupe nose i puno vulgarnije nazive, no teško da se ijedna može mjeriti s ostavštinom The Poguesa, grupe čije kompromisno odabrano ime cenzura odobrila.

    Impresivni peterostruki box set “Just Look Them Straight in the Eye and Say… Pogue Mahone!!” pruža uvid u neobjavljene snimke, demoverzije, izgubljene demosnimke, snimke koje bi voljeli da su izgubljene, raritete, radio izvedbe, obrade, filmske uratke, različite i live-verzije nekih njihovih najvećih hitova, ali i suradnje s Joeom Strummerom, Kirsty MacColl, Steveom Earlom i drugima.

    109 pjesama koje su sami odabrali obuhvaćaju vrijeme između 1983. i 2001., kada su se ponovno okupili nakon razlaza 1996, a svaka je popraćena kratkim tekstom Phila Chevrona.

    Na sam spomen The Poguesa, prva asocijacija je Shane MacGowan, jedan od najvećih i najsenzibilnijih autora svih vremena, s cigaretom u jednoj i čašom u drugoj ruci (uz očaravajući osmijeh).

    Muziku podržava

    Druga asocijacija je vješto uklapljanje stilova, jer malo tko je uspješno spojio punk s keltskom tradicijom. Ono što su The Poguesi radili može se najpreciznije navesti ‘sviranje novih stilova na stari način’, a vrijeme je pokazalo da su u tome bili i više nego uspješni: teško da bi danas ijedna grupa s njihovim instrumentarijem ostvarila bilo kakav značajniji uspjeh.

    Od njihova razlaza 1996. i reizdanja svih albuma, objavljen je velik broj kompilacija koje su obuhvaćale najveće trenutke benda. No sve su zakazale kod jedne stvari: The Pogues su kaotična grupa, za njih pravila nisu vrijedila i slaganje kronoloških kompilacija nije donijelo ništa novoga.

    Upravo zato je ovaj peterostruki ‘džumbus’ pun pogodak: kao da je netko tri desetljeća marljivo skupljao stvarčice trpajući ih u jednu ladicu te je onda istresao na pod sobe kako bi svatko uzeo ono što ga zanima. Ni u jednom trenutku ne znate što slijedi iduće nakon završetka pjesme koju slušate.

    A kad preslušate sve, lako je donijeti zaključak. Sve pjesme inferiorne su onima koje su pronašle svoje mjesto na albumima ili singleovima (“Fairytale of New York” zastupljena je u tri verzije koje se ni u kojem slučaju ne mogu nositi uz onu s albuma “If I Sould Fall from Grace with God”), stoga ovo izdanje više predstavlja glazbeno-povijesni dokument nego što pruža glazbenog užitka.

    Alternativne verzije pjesama (npr. “Rainy Night in Soho“), obrade “Do You Believe In Magic” The Lovin’ Spoonfula, “Eve of Destruction” Barrya McGuirea , “Maggie May” The Facesa, live-izvedbe “London Calling” ili “I Fought The Law” The Clasha, uz neobjavljene dijelove soundtracka filmova “Sid & Nancy“, “Garbo” i “Straight to Hell“, te ostatak materijala čine pravo bogatstvo koje stoji u paralelnom svemiru s njihovim službenim izdanjima.
