…kako bi mogao okupiti američki all-star zbor koji bi snimio pjesmu čiji bi sav prihod od prodaje također išao napaćenom stanovništvu Etiopije i ostatka Afrike.
Nakon što je nazvao menadžera u zabavnoj industriji – Kena Kragena, koji je zamolio svoje klijente – Lionela Richiea i Kennya Rogersa da sudjeluju u njegovu glazbenom pothvatu. Kragen, Richie i Rogers odlučili su mu pomoći te su dan kasnije za koordinatora pothvata pridodali Steviea Wondera kako bi cijelom projektu dao na važnosti. Kragen je u međuvremenu uveo Quincya Jonesa za koproducenta pjesme, a Richie Michaela Jacksona, koji je netom završio turneju sa svojom braćom te uživao veliki ugled i popularnost s albumom “Thriller” (1982.), za njezina koautora.
Nakon što je zajedno s Michaelom Jacksonom, Richiem, Belafonteom i Rogersom početkom sljedećega mjeseca pokrenuo humanitarnu fondaciju naziva United Support Of Artists Foundation (USA For Africa Foundation), Kregan se ubrzo povezao s Martyem Rogolom (organizatorom koji je već imao iskustva s pokretanjem humanitarnih fondova s Rogersom i Harryem Chapinom) te Barriem Bergmanom (vlasnikom američkoga lanca prodavaonica ploča Record Bar) i osnovao udrugu koja će se brinuti za sigurnost prihoda skupljenog putem spomenute fondacije.
Netom nakon održavanja ceremonije dodjele godišnjih American Music Awards 28. istoga mjeseca Kragen je odlučio snimiti album spomenute fondacije na kojem bi sudjelovale neke od najpopularnijih američkih glazbenih zvijezda u to vrijeme. Njegovu se pozivu odazvalo oko stotinjak izvođača, no samo ih je nešto više od 45 sudjelovalo u snimanju pjesme naziva “We Are The World” koju su nakon nekoliko dana pripremanja za samo dva sata zgotovili Michael Jackson i Richie.
Pjesma je pod nazivom “USA For Africa” službeno objavljena 7. ožujka, na etiketi CBS/Columbia Records. Nakon što se svih prvih 800.000 kopija rasprodalo u samo dva dana, 23. istoga mjeseca debitirala je na 21. mjestu Billboardove Hot 100 ljestvice te se do početka sljedećega mjeseca samo u SAD-u prodala u četiri milijuna primjeraka. 1. mjesto spomenute ljestvice dosegnula je 13. travnja gdje se sveukupno zadržala četiri tjedna. Osim u Velikoj Britaniji (gdje je čelnu poziciju dosegnula tjedan dana kasnije), pjesma je bila na prvim mjestima i u Kanadi, Nizozemskoj, Francuskoj, Novom Zelandu, Norveškoj, Švedskoj te Švicarskoj.
Pjesma je objavljena na istoimenom humanitarnom albumu raznih izvođača na kojem su se uz one Huey Lewis & The News, Perrya, The Pointer Sisters, Rogersa, Springsteena i Turner, također našle zasebne pjesme Chicaga te Princea, kao i “Tears Are Not Enough” kanadskog all-star benefit projekta Northern Lights. Album je dosegnuo 1. odnosno 31. mjesto američkog i britanskoga charta te se do kraja godine samo u Americi prodao u više od tri milijuna primjeraka. Također ga je pratila videokaseta – “We Are The World – The Video Event“.
Pjesma je po prvi put izvedena uživo na legendarnom humanitarnom spektaklu Live Aid na stadionu J.F. Kennedy u Philadelphiji 13. srpnja. Točno dva mjeseca kasnije osvojila je nagrade za ‘Najbolji videospot grupe’ i ‘Videospot’ odabran od strane gledatelja tijekom održavanja druge dodjele godišnjih MTV Video Music Awards u newyorškom Radio City Music Hallu.
25. veljače sljedeće godine osvojila je i četiri nagrade Grammy – za ‘Snimku godine’, ‘Pjesmu godine’, ‘Najbolju pop izvedbu dua ili grupe s vokalom’ te ‘Najbolji videospot – kratka forma’. Dodjela je bila održana u Shrine Auditoriumu u Los Angelesu. Također je iste godine bila proglašena ‘Pjesmom godine’ na dodjeli American Music Awards.
25 godina od svojeg originalnog izlaska, samo u drugačijoj postavi izvođača, snimljena je i za pomoć stradalima u potresom razorenom Haitiju.
